The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is one of the most important savings instruments for salaried employees in India. Both you and your employer contribute 12% of your basic salary to EPF every month. Over the years, this builds into a substantial retirement corpus. But do you know how to check your EPF balance? In this guide, we explain 5 easy ways to check your EPF balance — online, via app, SMS, missed call, and passbook.
Check on EPFO Portal (Step by Step)
The EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation) portal is the official way to check your EPF balance. Here is how to do it:
- Step 1: Visit the EPFO member portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in
- Step 2: Click on "Sign In" and enter your UAN (Universal Account Number) and password.
- Step 3: If you have not activated your UAN, click on "Activate UAN" first. You will need your UAN, Aadhaar, PAN, and date of birth.
- Step 4: After logging in, go to "View" → "Passbook" in the top menu.
- Step 5: Select the PF account you want to view (if you have multiple employers linked to your UAN).
- Step 6: Your EPF passbook will display — showing employee share, employer share, pension (EPS) share, and interest earned.
Note: The passbook is updated monthly after your employer files the ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return). It may take 1-2 days after ECR filing for the passbook to reflect the latest contributions.
What is UAN?
UAN (Universal Account Number) is a 12-digit unique number assigned to every EPF member. It acts as an umbrella for all your PF accounts across different employers. Even if you change jobs, your UAN remains the same — only a new PF account number is created and linked to your existing UAN. Your UAN is usually printed on your salary slip. If you cannot find it, ask your HR department or check on the EPFO portal using your Aadhaar or PAN.
Check via UMANG App
UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is a government app that provides access to various government services, including EPF. Here is how to check EPF balance on UMANG:
- Step 1: Download the UMANG app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Step 2: Register using your mobile number and verify with OTP.
- Step 3: Search for "EPFO" in the app's service list.
- Step 4: Tap on "Employee Centric Services" → "View Passbook".
- Step 5: Enter your UAN and verify with OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Step 6: Your EPF passbook with balance details will be displayed.
The UMANG app also allows you to raise claims, check claim status, and update your KYC details. It is available in multiple Indian languages, making it accessible for everyone.
Check via Missed Call
The easiest way to check your EPF balance is by giving a missed call. No internet, no app, no login required.
- Step 1: Dial 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number.
- Step 2: The call will disconnect automatically after 1-2 rings (missed call).
- Step 3: You will receive an SMS with your EPF details — including balance, last contribution, and PF account number.
Requirements:
- Your mobile number must be linked to your UAN.
- Your UAN must be activated and KYC must be complete.
- This service is available 24/7 and is completely free.
If you are not receiving the SMS, it likely means your mobile number is not registered with UAN. You can update it on the EPFO portal or through your employer.
Check via SMS
You can also check your EPF balance by sending an SMS from your registered mobile number.
- Step 1: Open your phone's messaging app.
- Step 2: Type: EPFOHO UAN (space between EPFOHO and UAN).
- Step 3: Send the SMS to 7738299899.
- Step 4: You will receive an SMS with your EPF balance details.
You can also specify a language code to receive the message in your preferred language:
| Language | SMS Format |
|---|---|
| English (default) | EPFOHO UAN |
| Hindi | EPFOHO UAN HIN |
| Tamil | EPFOHO UAN TAM |
| Telugu | EPFOHO UAN TEL |
| Marathi | EPFOHO UAN MAR |
| Bengali | EPFOHO UAN BEN |
| Kannada | EPFOHO UAN KAN |
| Malayalam | EPFOHO UAN MAL |
| Gujarati | EPFOHO UAN GUJ |
| Punjabi | EPFOHO UAN PUN |
SMS charges: Standard SMS rates apply (typically ₹1-2 per SMS depending on your mobile operator). The EPFO does not charge any fee for this service.
Check Passbook
The EPF passbook is a detailed statement of all your EPF transactions — contributions, interest credits, withdrawals, and transfers. Here is how to download and read it:
How to Download EPF Passbook
- Step 1: Go to the EPFO member portal: unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in
- Step 2: Log in with your UAN and password.
- Step 3: Click on "View" → "Passbook".
- Step 4: Select the PF account and click "Download Passbook".
- Step 5: The passbook is downloaded as a PDF file.
Understanding the Passbook
Your EPF passbook contains the following columns:
- Employee Share: Your contribution (12% of basic salary). This is fully yours and earns interest.
- Employer Share: Your employer's contribution (12% of basic salary). Of this, 8.33% goes to EPS (pension) up to a maximum of ₹15,000 basic salary, and the rest goes to EPF.
- Pension (EPS) Contribution: The 8.33% that goes to the Employee Pension Scheme. This does not earn interest but provides pension after retirement.
- Interest: Interest earned on the EPF balance. The rate is declared annually by EPFO (8.25% for FY 2025-26).
- Withdrawals: Any partial withdrawals (advance) or full withdrawals (final settlement).
EPF Interest Calculation
EPF interest is calculated monthly on the running balance but credited annually at the end of the financial year. Here is how it works:
Monthly Interest = (Balance × Annual Rate) / 12
Interest Calculation Example
Assume the following:
- Basic salary: ₹25,000/month
- Employee EPF contribution: 12% = ₹3,000/month
- Employer EPF contribution: 3.67% = ₹917/month (after 8.33% goes to EPS)
- EPF interest rate: 8.25% per annum
- Month 1 balance: ₹3,000 + ₹917 = ₹3,917
- Month 1 interest: ₹3,917 × 8.25% / 12 = ₹26.93
- Month 2 balance: ₹3,917 + ₹3,917 = ₹7,834
- Month 2 interest: ₹7,834 × 8.25% / 12 = ₹53.86
- ...and so on for each month
- Total interest for Year 1: approximately ₹2,140
Over 30 years of continuous contribution, the EPF corpus with interest and salary increments can grow to ₹1 crore or more. Use our EPF Calculator to estimate your exact corpus based on your salary and years of service.
EPF Interest Rate History

| FY 2022-23 | 8.15% |
| FY 2021-22 | 8.10% |

How to Update KYC
Updating your KYC (Know Your Customer) is essential for seamless EPF services. Without KYC, you cannot check your passbook, raise claims, or transfer funds. Here is how to update your KYC:
- Step 1: Log in to the EPFO member portal with your UAN and password.
- Step 2: Go to "Manage" → "KYC".
- Step 3: You will see a list of documents you can link — Aadhaar, PAN, Bank Account, Passport, Driving License, Voter ID, Ration Card.
- Step 4: Enter the document number and your name as per the document.
- Step 5: Click "Save". The status will show as "Pending".
- Step 6: Your employer will verify and approve the KYC. Once approved, the status changes to "Approved by Employer".
- Step 7: For Aadhaar, the verification is done digitally via UIDAI, so it may be approved instantly without employer intervention.
Important: Linking Aadhaar to your UAN is mandatory for raising online claims (withdrawal, transfer, pension). Make sure your name and date of birth match exactly between Aadhaar and your EPF records. If there is a mismatch, you will need to correct it through your employer or by visiting the EPFO office.
Common KYC Issues and Solutions
- Name mismatch: If your name differs between Aadhaar and EPF records, update your name in EPF through your employer (Form for joint declaration).
- Aadhaar not linking: Ensure your Aadhaar is linked to your mobile number for OTP verification. If not, visit an Aadhaar enrollment center to update your mobile number.
- PAN not verifying: Ensure your name and date of birth match exactly between PAN and EPF records. If PAN is not linked, TDS at 20% (instead of 10%) will be deducted on EPF withdrawal.
- Bank account mismatch: The name on your bank account must match the name on your UAN. If you have a joint account, only the primary account holder's name should match.

How can I check my EPF balance without UAN?
You can check EPF balance without UAN by visiting the EPFO portal and using your PF number or establishment code. However, UAN is now mandatory for all EPF accounts, and most methods require it. If you do not have a UAN, ask your employer to generate one, or check your payslip — most employers print the UAN on salary slips.
Is the missed call service for EPF balance free?
Yes, the EPFO missed call service (011-22901406) is completely free. You give a missed call and the call disconnects automatically after 1-2 rings. You receive an SMS with your EPF balance details. Your mobile number must be linked to your UAN for this service to work.
How often is EPF balance updated?
EPF balance is updated monthly by your employer when they file the ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return). However, interest is credited annually at the end of the financial year (usually by July-August). The passbook on the EPFO portal reflects the most recent monthly contributions and interest.
Why is my EPF passbook not showing?
EPF passbook may not show if: (1) your UAN is not activated, (2) your KYC is not verified, (3) your employer has not filed the ECR, or (4) the EPFO portal is under maintenance. Ensure your UAN is activated, KYC is updated, and try again after some time. If the issue persists, contact your employer or EPFO helpline at 1800-118-005.
Can I check EPF balance of my previous employer?
Yes, if you have linked your previous employer's PF account to your UAN, you can check the balance on the EPFO portal or UMANG app. All PF accounts linked to your UAN appear under a single login. If the old PF is not linked, you can transfer it to the current PF account using the EPF transfer request on the portal.
