How to Create a GST-Compliant Invoice
A valid GST invoice must contain specific information as mandated by the GST Act. Ensure your invoice includes the supplier's GSTIN, a unique sequential invoice number, date of issue, recipient's name and GSTIN (if registered), HSN/SAC codes for goods/services, description, quantity, taxable value, GST rate (CGST, SGST, IGST), and the place of supply.
For B2B invoices, GSTIN of both parties is mandatory. For B2C invoices where the value exceeds ₹2.5 lakh, the recipient's name and address must be included. Invoices must be issued before or at the time of removal of goods for supply, or within 30 days of providing services.
GST Invoice Format Requirements
- Invoice number must be sequential and unique for a financial year
- HSN codes are mandatory for goods; SAC codes for services
- For inter-state supply, charge IGST. For intra-state, charge CGST + SGST
- Reverse charge mechanism must be clearly indicated if applicable
- Discounts must be shown before GST calculation
